Ensuring Best Render Practices
The render's ability to distribute and resist stresses can be significantly improved by incorporating standard mesh cloth. This mesh should be applied at common stress points in the substrate, such as above and below openings like windows and doors, as well as at junctions of different materials, for instance, around ring beams. Additionally, mesh should be used around crack inducers like weep holes.
The correct positioning of the mesh within the render thickness is critical; it should not come into contact with the substrate. To avoid the mesh being exposed during the scraping process, it should be located mid-thickness within the first 5 to 10mm of the total render coat.
The mesh should be pressed evenly into the freshly applied layer of render using a trowel or spatula. It must be encapsulated in a wet-on-wet process to achieve a monolithic bond with the subsequent render layer. Mechanically fixing the mesh is not recommended as it will impair the render's bond to the wall; the mesh is not meant to act as carrier lathing. Cut the mesh into strips measuring 500mm x 250mm (height x length) to extend past the points of perceived weakness.
It's important to note that Pink Grip is not guaranteed by any render manufacturer. Despite this, it is commonly seen on many buildings prior to rendering, as it is frequently used for installing beads and trims. For optimal results, use 15mm beads and trims as standard.
